Steven Hill: The disappointment with Obama is tangible – on climate change and financial reform Europe leads while the US lags
To which my response via a comment was:
Mr. Hill is correct on all counts. Mind, I voted for Mr. Obama. I support his presidency and wish him the best; but I find myself disagreeing with much of what's been emanating from the White House these past several months, whilst lamenting what's not been forthcoming.
Surely there are formidable obstacles erected by corporations, mainly in the form of purchased politicians, which mitigate against any flourishing of democracy. The late Alex Carey, whose writings are effectively suppressed by corporations, knew that corporations continuously fight against manifestations of democracy. Most citizens in the U.S. are, I fear, either completely ignorant of that fact or else embrace it via a "That's just the way things are!" attitude of resignation.
Indeed, how can we as individuals effectively fight against corporate might? Forget Mr. Obama for a moment: tell us, Mr. Hill and others, how we - the people - can halt this world-wide corporate juggernaut. Corporations have owned governments ever since the Industrial Revolution began. How can we rid our various societies of this cancer?
Thank you, Mr. Hill, for your circumspect and thought-provoking article. What you've written is sad, but true. Perhaps Mr. Obama will eventually rise to the challenge of corporate dominance, by going over the heads of corporate executives and boards of directors and appealing directly to the citizenry. One can always hope.
