Obama's too timid, damn it!

Obama the impotent | Steven Hill | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
Steven Hill: The disappointment with Obama is tangible – on climate change and financial reform Europe leads while the US lags

To which my response via a comment was:

Mr. Hill is correct on all counts. Mind, I voted for Mr. Obama. I support his presidency and wish him the best; but I find myself disagreeing with much of what's been emanating from the White House these past several months, whilst lamenting what's not been forthcoming.

Surely there are formidable obstacles erected by corporations, mainly in the form of purchased politicians, which mitigate against any flourishing of democracy. The late Alex Carey, whose writings are effectively suppressed by corporations, knew that corporations continuously fight against manifestations of democracy. Most citizens in the U.S. are, I fear, either completely ignorant of that fact or else embrace it via a "That's just the way things are!" attitude of resignation.

Indeed, how can we as individuals effectively fight against corporate might? Forget Mr. Obama for a moment: tell us, Mr. Hill and others, how we - the people - can halt this world-wide corporate juggernaut. Corporations have owned governments ever since the Industrial Revolution began. How can we rid our various societies of this cancer?

Thank you, Mr. Hill, for your circumspect and thought-provoking article. What you've written is sad, but true. Perhaps Mr. Obama will eventually rise to the challenge of corporate dominance, by going over the heads of corporate executives and boards of directors and appealing directly to the citizenry. One can always hope.

Good reply, Mr Cat.

Without knowing much about american politics, I think that there are lobbyists around everything creating barriers to any meaningful change, and Obama needs to be more forceful and go against them to reall ymake a difference.

Thank you, Bea, for your compliment! You're exactly right: "lobbyists" are not in short supply at the U.S. Capitol. They bribe, they cajole, they persuade, they threaten - all in the name of corporations or groups of corporations. Sure, there are "lobbyists" who represent worthwhile not-for-profit organizations and who eschew illegal or underhanded tactics; but they're a tiny minority.

Indeed, Obama needs get tough! Most of his supporters throughout the U.S. are not impressed with his coddling of corporations (all that "bailout" nonsense) and his compromises on important issues (e.g., global warming, health care, international law, motor-vehicle fuel economy). He also seems incapable of whipping Democratic Party members of Congress into line. At times like this I miss Lyndon Johnson, who struck fear into the hearts of non-cooperative legislators.
